About Us
Several years ago, long-time friends David Strohmeyer and Charlie Gearhart teamed up to grow grapefruit and oranges on two small plots of land in the warm, fertile, citrus-growing belt of South Texas. It is land that is dear to their hearts. For David, it is where his childhood home still stands. For Charlie, a born farmer, it is next door to the land where he has produced citrus, corn and cotton since the 1950's.
As childhood friends, David and Charlie roamed this land together and swam in the canals that carry water from the Rio Grande River to irrigate thirsty crops. Today, as grandfathers, they keep watch as the land offers up what is arguably the world's best tasting, most nutritious citrus. There are two reasons: (1) South Texas is known for producing the best tasting citrus in the world. (2) When they planted these groves, Charlie and David made the decision to "go organic." This was a big step and they had to change their methods of farming.
Instead of synthetic fungicides, herbicides, and pesticides used by most growers, they have relied on natural nutrients and compost. As a result, they have seen the soil returning to a healthy, natural condition. They have noticed that the trees require very little irrigation and find their rate of growth and production to be amazing.
What about the fruit? It looks pretty on the trees. It looks better on a plate ready to eat. But the ultimate test is how it tastes. Charlie and David have been eating and enjoying South Texas citrus all their lives. But, even they were astonished at the delicious taste of the organic citrus from G and S Groves. When they started sending it to friends and family at Christmas, the response came in the form of requests for more, and more.
Now, G and S Groves ships its organic citrus directly to customers who are looking for unbeatable fruit and the excellent personal service we are able to provide as a small family-oriented business. In addition to Rio Red grapefruit and Texas navel oranges, we grow and sell a small number of lemons.
Citrus season starts late November. Write, call or contact us by email. We look forward to hearing from you. And, we promise you-Good Eating!
